Sculptural Cycles
On a trip to Costa Rica I was standing ankle deep in the waves along the coast of Playa Ventana. I was mesmerized by the cyclical motion of the water crashing and receding. The unbroken rhythm that keeps going, never bothered or affected by the seeming urgency of our day to day lives.
The six pieces together create an animation of a wave crashing, settling, and then receding back into the ocean. Each moment in the waves’ existence contains it’s own little universe of kinetic energy. Capturing these isolated moments of sculptural beauty found within a constantly moving body of water gives us a unique ability to relish in the powerful organic plasticity of the natural world.

Collection Details
The Churning Sepulture collection is named for the kinetic movement of the waves and the feeling of slowly sinking as each wave displaces the sand. This small way of physically grounding into the earth brings a sense of deep inner peace.
Each drawing is a top-down first person view on what one sees when standing in the break of the waves. What we see in each image is tightly boxed in and separated from the surrounding context. This way we focus in on the raw abstract energy of each snapshot of the wave. All are drawn with tinted charcoal on Bristol paper.
